Program Information

Memorial’s PhD Biochemistry Jobs in Management is a four-year full-time program. It is offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and is subject to the regulations of the School of Graduate Studies.

Courses

In the first two years of the program, students will complete a program of courses in research methods and either (1) operations management and information systems or (2) organizational behaviour and human resources management

Summer Research Project

During the first summer of the program, students will complete a research project under the supervision of a faculty member in the area of specialization. Projects will then be presented in a research seminar during the second year of the program.

Comprehensive Exam

By the end of the seventh semester of the program, students will take a written comprehensive exam.

PhD Thesis

All students must submit a thesis proposal by the end of the eighth semester in the program, laying out a program of research that will make an independent and original research contribution. This will be followed by an oral presentation of the proposal. On acceptance, students will complete the research plans outlined in the proposal.

Teaching

Students in the PhD program will be given the opportunity to teach in the third and fourth year of their program.

Student Outcomes

Throughout the program, students will explore new ways of thinking. World-renowned researchers will work with students on research projects of theoretical and practical importance. At the end of the program, graduates will have made a significant contribution to advanced theory and current practice in either
(1) operations management or information systems, or
(2) organizational behaviour or human resource management.

The doctoral student will carry out his or her studies mainly in Freiburg under the supervision of Professor Roland Hefendehl at the Institute for Criminology and Corporate Criminal Law at Freiburg University: He or she will participate in the training program offered by the IMPRS-REMEP and can make use of the facilities and infrastructure of the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law. The interdisciplinary curriculum further requires participation in several joint seminars to be conducted together with the doctoral students who are affiliated with the IMPRS-REMEP partner institutes in Halle/Saale, Heidelberg and Frankfurt/Main. During these seminars, all students shall achieve cross-disciplinary knowledge in order to develop a common understanding of the overall research agenda and to be able to mutually understand and discuss their doctoral theses from the perspectives of all relevant disciplines. Working language of the training program and the dissertation is generally English. According to local university regulations, German language skills are required for the final oral exam in sociology and also partly in law. The scientific supervision of the doctoral students will be carried out by the Max Planck Institute and the University of Freiburg. Cross-disciplinary dissertation projects may be co-supervised by a member of the academic staff from a partner institute. Also, foreign doctoral students may choose to earn their doctorate from their home institution abroad.

Requirements

Completion of a law degree at a German university or completion at an equivalent university abroad. First or Second German State Law Exam with a minimum overall grade of “vollbefriedigend” (according to the examination regulations “JAPrO” of the State of Baden-Württemberg), or an equivalent degree with an equivalent grade (“with distinction”) from abroad.
Alternatively, completion of a regular university studies in social sciences with an overall duration of at least 4 years at a German or equivalent university from abroad. Master degree in sociology as major subject, or equivalent degree from Germany or abroad.

Why a Masters?

With the now large numbers of graduates with first degrees, it is important to stand out from the crowd: a Masters degree provides the extra experience and skills that people need to progress their chosen career quicker and further. At Lancaster University we see students from two main sources; recent graduates who need to extend their knowledge, and mature or career changing students who want to switch into ecological or environmental careers. Industry-linked projects

The Enterprise and Business Partnerships Unit (EBP) within LEC is one of the University’s major foci for collaborative work with the commercial sector. The Graduate Consultancy programme gives students working towards a postgraduate degree within LEC the opportunity to gain real-world experience by working on a collaborative project with business. Students apply their University-gained expertise to environmental projects, proposed by our commercial partners, via both the industrial placement module and/or a long 3-4 month dissertation project. Project description
The project will be concerned with the use of ultrasound to generate images for clinical and research use and with the extraction of quantitative data from these images. The fellowship is partly funded by the strategic initiative at KU-LIFE, CHANCE and will utilize chemometric analyses as part of its research methodology. Ultrasound images from an ongoing research project involving eels are available and further experiments will require further imaging by the Fellow in this species. In addition the PhD Fellow will be expected to identify suitable clinical patients and collect data form them at the Department´s Small Animal Hospital and perform subsequent analysis. The aim being to describe relevant clinical or physiological parameters. The research work will be based primarily at the Small Animal Hospital, however some of the research image collection may be done by the Fellow at an external research farm. In addition to the duties described below, the PhD fellow will be expected to contribute to the clinical and teaching activities of the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences. The project will provide opportunities to develop existing skills in general veterinary diagnostic imaging using digital radiography, CT, MRI, scintigraphy and in particular ultrasound. Training in image analysis and statistical analysis techniques will be an integral party of the fellowship. Principal supervision on the project will be provided by the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences with additional supervision provided by the CHANCE initiative.

Society of Civil War Historians Announce First Tom Watson Brown Book Award

The Society of Civil War Historians and the Watson-Brown Foundation are proud to announce that Daniel Sutherland of the University of Arkansas is the first recipient of the $50,000 Tom Watson Brown Book Award. Sutherland received the award for his book A Savage Conflict: The Decisive Role of Guerrillas in the American Civil War, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2009.

According to George Rable, who holds the Summersell Chair in Southern History at the University of Alabama and served as chair of the prize jury, Sutherland’s book “shows the grim and gritty reality of the Civil War beyond the major battlefields and throughout both the Confederacy and border states.” In addition, the “engagingly written” book “reconfigures our understanding of the relationship between the battlefield and the Southern home-front” in a way that makes “a distinguished and lasting contribution to the field.”

The award announcement was made on June 19 at the SCWH biannual conference in Richmond, Virginia. Sutherland will formally accept the award and deliver the keynote address at the Society’s annual banquet at the Southern Historical Association in Charlotte in November. The award is funded by the Watson-Brown Foundation in honor of the broadcaster, philanthropist, and Civil War enthusiast Tom Watson Brown. The Foundation makes annual awards of more than $1 million in merit and need-based college scholarships to students from the Central Savannah River Area and offers research grants to historians and historic preservation projects.

Virginia's Nurse Practitioner Nurse Midwife Scholarship Program

Virginia scholarship program for students enrolled in nursing education programs to become nurse practitioners or nurse midwives. Student recipients must agree to engage in full time practice in a designated medically underserved area for a period of years equal to the number of annual scholarships received. The scholarship recipient may pre select a medically underserved area where service employment will take place at any time prior to entering practice.

Eligible candidates

To be considered for a Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Midwife Scholarship, an applicant must meet the following criteria:

1.Residency in Virginia for at least one year.
2.Acceptance or enrollment as a full time student in a nurse practitioner/nurse midwifery program in the State of Virginia or a nurse midwifery program in a nearby state.

4.Have submitted a completed application form, and official grade transcript of graduate and/or undergraduate courses, and a statement of intent to practice as a nurse practitioner/nurse midwife in an undeserved area of Virginia following graduation.
5.Submission of two reference letters.
6.Submission of all materials to the Office of Health Policy and Planning prior to the established deadline.

Failure to comply with any of the above will cause the applicant to be ineligible for a nurse practitioner/nurse midwife scholarship. Applicants will be graded and ranked by the scholarship committee, and the most qualified candidates will be awarded the scholarships.

Amount of funding

It is important that all applicants fully understand the conditions of accepting a Nurse Practitioner/Nurse Midwife Scholarship. These awards are not gifts. Student recipients must agree to engage in full time practice in a designated medically underserved area for a period of years equal to the number of annual scholarships received. The scholarship recipient may pre select a medically underserved area where service employment will take place at any time prior to entering practice. This selection may be altered 90 days prior to beginning practice, at which time the recipient must choose from the current list of medically underserved areas and must receive approval from the State Health Commissioner or his designee of the practice location. The practice facility must provide services to persons who are unable to pay for the service and must participate in all government sponsored insurance programs designed to assure access to medical care service for covered persons.

Therefore, if a student received a one year scholarship award he must repay that amount by working continuously in Virginia for one (1) year. Full time employment must begin within two (2) years of the recipient's graduation date from the program. Voluntary military service, even if stationed in Virginia, cannot be used to repay scholarship awards.

A Post-doctoral Fellowship is available for up to five years on the production and characterization of iron/iron oxide core/shell nanoparticles for magnetic hyperthermia cancer treatment. The position, which starts on September 1st, 2010 or soon thereafter, is funded by the Dartmouth Center for Cancer Nanotechnology Excellence, which supports a large group of researchers working on functionalizing nanoparticles, developing innovative nanoparticle imaging technologies, and utilizing the nanoparticles for in vivo magnetic hyperthermia studies.

The applicant should preferably have a Ph.D. in Chemistry or Materials Science and a background in nanoparticle synthesis by chemical means, magnetic property measurements, and microstructural characterization techniques, including experience in transmission electron microscopy. Join a group developing medical imaging devices based on electrical impedance tomography for use in image-guided prostate biopsy. This position involves implementing high-speed image reconstruction algorithms in electrical impedance tomography. This group member will be directly responsible for developing and programming advanced 3D FEM algorithms directly onto graphical processing unit (GPUs) for real-time imaging. This position will also involve developing fusion algorithms for linking electrical and ultrasound images and analysis of phantom and clinical images for algorithm assessment.

A PhD project studentship sponsored by the National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) is available at the University of Liverpool. The project is a collaboration between the Department of Physics and the Department of Electrical Engineering & Electronics at the University of Liverpool. The project aims to develop a gamma-ray sensor, couple it with a 3-D vision system and provide control algorithms for a mechanical manipulator for decommissioning applications.

The ability to locate and identify radioactive material with high precision will lead to reliable quantification of waste into low/intermediate/ high brackets, with the potential to significantly reduce the cost and time of decommissioning. The system will be capable of producing gamma ray images in real time during the decommissioning operation. The optical stereoscopic system will also provide information regarding the environment to assist access and route-planning for a mobile robot.

The proposed solution will be developed by nuclear physicists and electronic engineers and will utilise state-of-the-art gamma-ray imaging sensors that have been developed and built by the Department of Physics for radiological imaging in medical and industrial applications. The Department of Electrical Engineering & Electronics have established expertise in the theory and application of machine vision and image/signal processing, as well as geometric and pattern analysis modelling.

The successful candidate will lead the development and initial deployment of the imaging system. Experience with radiation sensors and/or image processing / mathematical optimisation will be an advantage. The Studentship is available for 3.5 years from 1 October 2010

The George Snow Scholarship Fund celebrated its 27th Anniversary in true festive fashion by awarding $357,000.00 in scholarships to 65 deserving scholar recipients during their 2009 Annual Awards Reception. This year's event was generously underwritten by Al and Toni Petrangeli, Bova Cucina, the R.A Ritter Foundation, Babione Funeral Homes, BNY Mellon Wealth Management and The Boca News. "Because of the donations from our sponsors, we were able to host this wonderful event at no cost to our fund, the scholarship winners or their guests," states Tim Snow, President of The George Snow Scholarship Fund.

"This is an extremely important and significant event for the Scholarship Fund and our supporters," Snow said, "It is the culmination of a year's worth of hard work and fund-raising events, all designed to raise much needed funding for scholarships; which will support these most worthy young people over the next four years. I am amazed at the quality of individuals who receive our awards; they are amazing young people who have worked hard to accomplish all that they have. There is no question that they will make us all very proud."

In addition to financial assistance, each Snow scholar received a gift bag filled with items they can use while away at college including a new HP laptop computer or a $300 college supply stipend. Among the other items were a Mr. Coffee coffeemaker and Oster blender donated by Jarden Consumer Products of Boca Raton, a Microsoft Office productivity suite donated by Microsoft Inc., a Nike backpack, a shower caddy donated by Boca Raton Community Hospital, a Palm Beach County logoed calculator donated by County Commissioner Steve L. Abrams. Additional items such as pens, a flash drive and various school supplies were underwritten by supporters of the Scholarship Fund. Overall, the gifts the Snow Scholars received were valued at over $1,000.

In addition to the educational scholarships and college supplies awarded, each year the Fund recognizes one special recipient who represents volunteerism, generosity, commitment, and unselfishness; the award is known as the Robert S. Howell Spirit of Service Award. A little over a year ago, the George Snow Scholarship Fund and the Boca Raton Community lost a long time friend and supporter, Bob Howell, to cancer. Bob Howell holds a special place in the history of the George Snow Scholarship Fund. He was a founding trustee of the Fund, serving on the fund's organizational committee and later serving as Chairman of the Board. He was a major factor in the successes they have today. This year's recipients embody all that this award was established to represent. The Fund's 2009 recipients are Brenda and Leo Coto.

"They are active in the community in many ways. What I really respect about them is the quiet way to go about helping others. They do not do what they do for recognition and accolades", said Tim Snow, "They are the perfect recipients of the Robert S. Howell Spirit of Service Award. Brenda and Leo have been long time supporters of the George Snow Scholarship Fund in many ways. The George Snow Scholarship Fund, a Boca Raton-based 501(c)3 Public Charity, provides educational grants to some of our areas brightest and most deserving young scholars. These scholarships are four-year commitments and are designed to bridge the gap between other financial aid and what the scholar and their families can afford. UCL Global Excellence Scholarships aim to reward academic excellence among new UCL students.

There are a total of 8 scholarships per session for the academically most outstanding graduate students joining UCL. Students enrolling on joint programmes (programmes run by UCL and another university) are not eligible. One graduate award is reserved for a student from each of the following regions (based on students' domicile - on UCAS forms this would be "area of permanent residence").
